Noah Smith being a liberal, and biased towards liberal democracy (and therefore perhaps biased in his analysis of the war, like I am and like probably everyone is). I thought it was illuminating, though, that even if they sanctions weren't particularly well thought-out and orchestrated, they still had the desired effect of making it significantly harder for Russia to wage war. See also: Iran drones, drawing war resources from Syria, etc. Seems like desperate measures for such a large country and supposedly powerful military. 🤷
